drsteph,
Sorry, I've been out of town a week.
The area we all probably get carried away in is our pride. It causes us to reach for things that go beyond what we can afford so we can keep up with the neighbors. We look good to others but inside we struggle with paying for all we have.
If all you earn goes to the mortgage, you won't have any to tithe or to pay for food, utilities, etc., and the occasional night out. The money woes will carry over into fighting over who is overspending, the husband or wife.
While the Bible doesn't give direct advice on buying a house, Proverbs does speak about having wisdom, and taking counsel. The problem develops when we don't like the advice or don't want to take it and we go seek advice more to our liking.
Setting up and maintaining a budget, while exceedingly boring, will help you in the long run.
My wife is a financial manager and she has shown me through the years how not to be so impulsive in spending as this wrecks a budget, how to set money aside for unexpected items, how to save, etc. I've gone on spending freezes, spending nothing for a month to regain my financial footing and spending less than what is in my account.
We look to Christ to help is in our weaknesses, dying to what self wants and to be led by Him and yoked with our husbands and wives in common goals.
